Collaboration Exercise/Broken Shore

With the director/cine/editor collab I was completely unprepared. By the time I had spoken to the directors it was too late. They were about to walk on set and it felt like anything I did say would be completely forgotten by the anxiety of shooting.

I really should have spoken to them a few days before. The main issues with such late communication were that sound and camera had not been set up to assist syncing on my end, I really needed either camera to record scratch audio or camera and sound to record time of day. This would have saved me a day of syncing. Being said it was a really good exercise in learning how to manually sync to clap or bilabials.

This was a really hard edit for me. I still can't pin point why, perhaps it was because I'm not use to cutting such extreme handheld footage, or that the performances were quite rigid. There was also a lot of coming and going from rooms, and I'm not sure I handled that properly.

In the end I got to an edit that I am actually quite pleased with. I never thought I'd get there, but persisting really helped get this to a place where it was working.

Roland really helped me to find elements of the characters that we could empower through the edit. For example he suggested Helen barge through doors and not wait for them to be opened for her. Little observations and changes like this really helped sell the edit.

Thanks Roland! You're a genius.

As for collaborating with the directors, I was having quite a hard time with Oren because he was really very specific about what frames he wanted when and where, and that kind of shut down my own interpretation and instinct before I'd had a chance to make a rough cut. From this I've learnt to not bring the directors in too early.

Working with Shannon and Hattie was amazing, everyone was working to get this video to a place where it would work and sell, we all had the same objective and helped each other get there. A very successful collaboration.
